Currently the ISPC does not have funding, thus no current workplan exists. ISPC continues to support the 11 local suicide prevention councils across the state and provide information and resources upon request to anyone seeking it. Bi-monthly meetings are held in Indianapolis (call in option is available) and anyone can attend. See new/events link for next ISPC meeting date and location.
Key ISPC accomplishments are listed below. For a full review of accomplisments across the state, click here.
- Securing broad-based participation from 50 members which include state agencies, mental health professionals and agencies, researchers, survivors, faith leaders, educators, the violence/injury prevention community, law enforcement, and local suicide prevention council leaders from across the state. It continues to meet bi-monthly;
- Developed the Indiana State Suicide Prevention Plan with key stakeholders from state agencies and communities around the state;
- Developing and providing on-going support to a network of 11 regional/county-level suicide prevention councils across the State. ISPC provides on-going consultation and support to all of the councils and coalitions on a regular basis and Indiana Cares has provided funding (via mini-awards of up to $4,000) to 10 of these councils to further their suicide prevention efforts;
- Conducting several broad-based assessments: A state-wide survey of all primary and secondary schools to identify suicide prevention and intervention resources and programs (2005) and a telephone survey in four metropolitan areas across Indiana about knowledge and attitudes of mental illness, suicide, and suicide prevention (2007);
- Connecting Hoosiers around the issue of suicide prevention through the ISPC website, listservs, an email list 1000 strong, and bi-weekly email blasts. ISPC also encourages adaptation and sharing of resources between local suicide prevention councils;
- Building training capacity across the state to provide evidence-based suicide prevention training. With a boost from Indiana Cares funding, currently there are active network of suicide intervention trainers (using the ASIST program), suicide prevention trainers (using the QPR and safeTALK programs), lethal means restriction trainers (using the CALM program), and suicide risk assessment trainers (using the AMSR program) across all regions of the state. ISPC and Indiana Cares offer six evidence-based training programs;
- Creating resources (e.g., brochures and posters) and educating (via 2 conferences) Hoosiers about the relationship between gambling and suicide thanks to a grant to the Behavioral Health and Family Studies Institute by the Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA).
- Partnering with colleges that teach courses on suicide and depression to have students work on projects related to Indiana’s State Suicide Prevention Plan. Specifically, Saint Mary’s College and Indiana University have had students work on creating brochures, PSAs, contact lists, PowerPoint presentations, data reports by region, etc.
- Working with the Indiana Department of Education to update their Student Suicide manual that was distributed to guidance counselors around the state to help them respond to suicidal students and prevent youth suicide.
- Raising awareness through presentations at conferences and to community groups about suicide and how to prevent it. When appropriate, both ISPC and Indiana Cares staff booths at health fairs, fundraisers, conferences, and other events.
- Provided technical assistance to hundreds of individuals and organizations regarding suicide prevention resources and information, training, events, support after a loss due to suicide, etc.
