Promoting public awareness that suicide is a public health problem that is preventable by:
- Mass distribution of the new general suicide prevention awareness brochure created in partnership with Saint Mary’s College.
- Helping to update the Department of Education’s Student Suicide manual
- Creating a professional display about ISPC’s work and suicide prevention more generally
- Presenting at numerous conferences and meetings, and distributing key suicide prevention awareness materials to participants.
- Working to finalize brochure describing the work of the Coalition
- Continuing to build statewide email list to disseminate information on suicide and suicide prevention
Developing broad-based support for suicide prevention by:
- Jump starting a new Muncie/East Central Indiana county suicide prevention council
- Working with a masters in public health student to gauge interest in starting a council in Bloomington.
- Institutionalizing a recently formed Northwest Indiana Suicide Prevention Council
Identifying existing or assisting in developing community-based suicide prevention programs by:
- Hosting an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) training for trainers (T4T) to increase the distribution and number of ASIST trainers around the state.
- Working with large corporation’s (Delphi and GM) to determine which suicide prevention programs would be most appropriate for their employees.
- Working with Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne to design and implement an awareness campaign, including suicide prevention awareness door hangers which were distributed at student housing
- Distributing the Florida State University Youth Suicide Prevention School-based guide to all Indiana schools.
- Organizing a QPR Instructors training to increase the number and distribution of QPR trainers around the state.
- Mapping out the location of all QPR and ASIST trainers around the state.
Developing and promoting effective clinical and professional practices by:
- Promoting the use of either QPR-T or American Association of Suicidology (AAS) & Suicide Prevention Resource Center’s (SPRC) Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk clinician training for clinicians in Kokomo.
Promoting and supporting research on suicide and suicide prevention.
- Designing a telephone survey to be used in four metropolitan areas in Indiana to gather data on suicide and suicide prevention attitudes and awareness to be used to inform local suicide prevention efforts.
- Analyzing youth suicide prevention needs assessment data by region and sharing the results with local/regional suicide prevention councils around the state.
- Designing and implementing a web-based evaluation of ASIST participants trained by the new ASIST Trainers to determine the extent to which the participants are using their suicide intervention skills training.
Strengthening the Coalition by:
- Diversifying and growing the Coalition’s membership
- Constructing a Speaker’ Bureau
- Developing a PowerPoint presentation to use by Speaker’s Bureau
- Creating a professional display
