Suicide Prevention Related Events


The Indiana Cares Youth Suicide Prevention Project is funded by a 3-year Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grant under the Garrett Lee Smith Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Program. It is a project of the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) College of Health & Human Services, Behavioral Health & Family Studies Institute. It is a sister project of, and builds on the work of, the Indiana Suicide Prevention Coalition.

The core of the Indiana Cares Project is the Youth Suicide Prevention Technical Assistance Center. The TAC provides assistance and resources to individuals, communities and agencies across Indiana to prevent suicide among youth ages
10 - 24.

The website, www.indianacares.org is now operational and will give you further information and suicide prevention assistance.

Free Web-Based Training provided by the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide. Click on the "national" version of the curriculum;  it is interactive and you can stop and start as needed. Click here to check it out.

CIRC Training Workshop "Assessing & Working with Suicide Potential on an Outpatient Basis"

Presenter: Alan D. Schmetzer, M.D., D.L. F.A.P.A., F.A.O.A, Dept. of Psychiatry, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indpls. This workshop will cover the major predictors of suicide risk, including how substance abuse and dependence relate to suicide; provide information on suicide screening and assessment; outline what information referring agencies should provide when sending someone for further assessment; and offer tips for counseling people who are intermittently suicidal. Youth Suicide Prevention Training

The Connect Project trains professionals and community members to recognize early signs of suicide (prevention), the skills to respond to thoughts, threats and attempts (intervention) and the promotion of healing & the reduction of risks after (postvention). For a limited time, a grant allows the Connect Project to offer free training. Mental Health Rally

Indianapolis will show its support of theWalk to Washington with the help of DBSA Greater Indianapolis. John & Terry Weymouth of DBSA Greater Indianapolis have coordinated a Chapter Picnic with the WTW team, which is to be held on Sat., Aug. 28. A large rally is scheduled to take place on Monday, Aug. 30 at the historic Monument Circle in Downtown Indy and will feature several speakers and a balloon release. Walkers will then continue on their journey to Washington D.C. On Thurs., Oct. 7, DBSA National Capitol Area will be hosting the Final Rally at the George Washington University Hospital Auditorium.
